Stephen A. Mette, M.D.
Dr. Stephen “Steppe” Mette facilitates clinical goals and initiatives across College of Medicine departments as Executive Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs. He also serves as Chief Clinical Officer for UAMS Medical Center.
He joined UAMS in April 2015 as Chief Clinical Officer, a new post that combined the role of Chief Medical Officer with shared executive oversight of UAMS’ newly implemented clinical service lines. He is also a Professor in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care in the Department of Internal Medicine.
Dr. Mette came to UAMS from the Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine, where he was Chief of the Department of Critical Care for six years and Chair of Critical Care Services for nine years. Earlier posts at Maine Medical Center included President of the medical staff, Director of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care and Medical Director for Respiratory Care.
Dr. Mette also served as an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston and, prior to that, as a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Vermont School of Medicine.
He received his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College in New York. He completed his internal medicine residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where he served as Chief Resident. Dr. Mette also completed clinical and research fellowships in the Cardiovascular-Pulmonary Division of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he went on to serve as a Clinical Assistant Professor from 1989 to 1995.
