Dr. Richard Turnage has served in numerous leadership roles since joining the College of Medicine faculty as professor and chair of the Department of Surgery in 2008. He is currently chief service line officer for the UAMS Integrated Clinical Enterprise in addition to the college’s executive associate dean for clinical affairs.

Dr. Turnage has been appointed Vice Chancellor for Clinical Programs and CEO of UAMS Medical Center, effective Dec. 1, 2016.

Dr. Turnage oversees all aspects of the college’s clinical mission and is working closely with UAMS Medical Center leadership to implement and administer clinical service lines designed to ensure highest-quality patient care and enhanced support for UAMS’ education and research missions.

Dr. Turnage served as interim chair of the Department of Urology in 2010-2012 and interim chair of the Department of Radiology in 2012-2014. As chair of the Hospital Medical Board in 2012-2014, Dr. Turnage facilitated a heightened focus on patient- and family-centered care, quality and patient satisfaction. He served as interim dean of the college in 2015 prior to Dr. Pope Moseley’s arrival in July.

Dr. Turnage received his medical degree from the LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport in 1983. He completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Michigan Medical Center, serving as chief resident and completing a research fellowship before joining the faculty. He went on to hold faculty and clinical leadership posts at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and Dallas VA Medical Center, and later at LSU Shreveport, where he served as chair of the Department of Surgery for seven years until his recruitment to UAMS.
