    Cardiology

The Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at UAMS provides the type of care which can only be obtained at a major academic center. Each of our patients has an individual cardiologist, but we also function as a highly integrated and sub-specialized team. Such an integrated approach allows for each cardiologist to draw upon the specific skills of all our colleagues for treatment of each individual patient. We have dedicated interventional cardiologists, electrophysiologists, and echo specialists who each engage in a high volume of procedures providing our patients unsurpassed skills. We aim to provide a continuity of care for each patient from the clinic to the hospital to the laboratory. Our focus is on both our patients and their families to provide easy access, outstanding care, and timely and relevant communication.

Our facilities are substantial. We practice in a new university hospital which opened its doors in January 2009. We have a dedicated cardiac intensive care unit, cardiology step-down ward, cath lab, electrophysiology laboratory, and non-invasive laboratory. At the VA, we have a dedicated ICU, cardiology ward, 2 cath labs, EP lab, and non-invasive lab. All of our facilities are state-of-the-art.

Our mission is to educate the next generation of cardiologists. To this end, we train 12 general cardiology fellows, 2 interventional fellows, and 1 electrophysiology fellow. We have cardiology rotations for our medical residents and students. We have extensive basic and clinical research programs which focus on gene therapy for the treatment of hypertension and the delineation of the role of inflammation in atherogenesis.
