Clerkship FAQs

What can I expect my clerkship rotation to be like?

Students work with UAMS faculty and residents, learning to recognize and manage a broad range of diagnoses encountered in the family medicine outpatient clinical setting.

Students will have the initial contact with patients and perform history taking, physical exams, and note writing.

They will present patients to the attending physicians and discuss their findings and plans for diagnosis and treatment.

Students are also required to participate in a online didactic curriculum with their classmates across the state.

What is the duration of the clerkship?

The family medicine clerkship is a four-week rotation.

Where will I rotate?

Students will rotate in UAMS outpatient family medicine clinics on Main Campus, or at one of seven Regional Campus locations.

How will I be assigned to a rotation site?

The family medicine clerkship utilizes a lottery system.  Students may note their extenuating circumstances and location preference.  Although every effort is made to accommodate preferences, students are not guaranteed their first choice.  Final rotation assignments are at the discretion of the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine.

Is housing available at the Regional Campus locations?

Yes.  Complementary housing is provided at each Regional Campus site.  More information can be found on the Community and Housing webpage.

Students will receive a detailed informational email from the local housing coordinator one to two weeks prior to the start of the rotation.
