Online Workshop – Thursday, June 22, 2023
Professional Development Hours – 6
The NIH funded ArkanSONO SEPA (Science Education Partnership Award) staff at UAMS will conduct this online virtual workshop designed primarily for Anatomy & Physiology teachers. Teachers will benefit from this workshop by gaining an understanding and confidence in interpreting ultrasound and Computerized Tomography (CT) imaging and how to incorporate these modalities into their classroom using available online and ArkanSONO developed resources. Attendees will work individually to complete an asynchronous preworkshop survey and video training. The synchronous part of the workshop will be held online using ZOOM and will include large group professional demonstrations and small group breakout room discussions. The cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous and urogenital systems will be used as model systems for the workshop and the presentations will be aligned to Anatomy & Physiology concepts and tailored to follow a typical chapter flow in these model systems. Presentations will include: Brief anatomy review, live ultrasound scanning of organs on male and female standardized patients, demonstrations of Computerized Tomography (CT) imaging of human organs including 3D reconstructions. Attendees will work individually after the workshop to complete an asynchronous postworkshop assignment.
Participants will join the synchronous and asynchronous workshop activities using their own home/work computers and the links provided through email after registration. Participants are not expected to have any previous knowledge of or experience using the imaging modalities to be used in this workshop.

Agenda
Preworkshop Asynchronous Activity
(to be completed prior to workshop-will be released to participants at end of May/early June)
Estimated time: 1 hour
Attendees will be asked to:
- Complete a preworkshop survey of their familiarity with ultrasound and CT and previous use of outside supplemental imaging resources in their classroom;
- Watch two online videos describing the physics of ultrasound and computerized tomography and complete and submit a short quiz based on the videos; and
- Provide a brief sentence or two describing what they expect to learn from the workshop and how this will contribute to an enhanced classroom experience for their students.

Postworkshop Asynchronous Activity (to be completed after the workshop)
Estimated time: 1 hour
Attendees will be asked to:
- Complete a postworkshop survey reporting their newly gained level of confidence with using ultrasound and CT in the classroom;
- Complete an evaluation survey including a short paragraph describing what they learned from the workshop; and
- Submit a draft lesson plan on how they would incorporate available online ultrasound and CT imaging resources in at least two separate systems in their Anatomy & Physiology classrooms.
Target Audience
This workshop is primarily designed for those teachers who currently teach or plan to teach Anatomy & Physiology. The sessions will provide training on how to incorporate ultrasound and CT imaging into the curriculum and include examples focused on several different model systems.
Registration
Interested teachers should register at: https://forms.gle/895Lhhnqzs1wTqpD8
Attendees will be sent a link for an asynchronous activity in late May/early June that must be completed and submitted before the workshop. The Zoom link will be provided by email the week prior to the workshop.
Content
The effectiveness of the teaching of Anatomy & Physiology often depends on providing students with correlative hands-on laboratory activities or incorporating stimulating, real life application presentations. Imaging of the body has rapidly developed over the last few decades, especially as it relates to ultrasound (US) scanning and 3D reconstructions of the body from Computerized Tomography (CT) scans. Online resources for ultrasound and CT imaging geared towards high school students is limited. The ArkanSONO staff at UAMS is developing a free online repository of US and CT images and videos targeted towards high school students. This workshop will provide teachers with the knowledge of these imaging modalities and also increase their confidence in incorporating such imaging modalities into their course curriculum. The inclusion of these living anatomy resources in classroom didactic curriculum will serve to reinforce and engage student learning. Student achievement will increase from teachers that are trained and confident in incorporating these state-of-the-art imaging modalities.
Learning Objectives
The learning designs for the Ultrasound and CT Imaging for Anatomy & Physiology Teachers online workshop are to increase teacher content knowledge and model supplemental teaching techniques that teachers can use to deliver enhanced teaching content in the Anatomy and Physiology course classroom. The key learning designs include:
- Increase teacher knowledge of modern imaging modalities through presentation of four model systems.
- Model how to use state-of-the-art US and CT Imaging modalities in the classroom to enhance student learning of important organ system anatomy and physiology concepts.
- Network with other Anatomy & Physiology teachers on how best to incorporate these imaging modalities in the classroom.
- Network with the ArkanSONO staff at UAMS to develop online resources that meet the needs of the teachers and their students nationwide.
