Training Tomorrow’s Lung and Sleep Specialists
Pediatric pulmonology subspecialists at Arkansas Children’s provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment for children with conditions such as cystic fibrosis, chronic cough, asthma and other causes of wheezing, aspiration/dysphagia-related lung disease, chronic lung disease of prematurity (bronchopulmonary dysplasia), and a wide variety of other disorders. The Pediatric Pulmonary group, consisting of eight pediatric pulmonologists, pediatric Pulmonary Medicine fellows, advanced practice nurses, specialty nurses, respiratory therapists, social workers, nutrition specialists and others, employs a team approach; providing full-service inpatient and outpatient care. In addition to our Little Rock location, a Pediatric Pulmonary Clinic is located at Arkansas Children’s Northwest in Springdale, offering pulmonary services five days a week.
The Section of Pediatric Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine includes education and training on state-of-the-art bronchoscopy, outstanding pulmonary function testing laboratories and respiratory therapy services, clinical service at a fully-accredited Pediatric Sleep Center, the only accredited Cystic Fibrosis Center in the state, the Arkansas Children’s Home Ventilator Program, outpatient Pulmonary Clinic services in Little Rock and Springdale and telemedicine visits when appropriate.
Pulmonary specialists attend several multidisciplinary clinics including a Severe Asthma Clinic, SMA Clinic, Muscular Dystrophy Clinic, Sickle Cell Clinic, Fontan Clinic and others. The Home Ventilator Program provides state-of-the-art services for children requiring respiratory support at home such as a ventilator, airway clearance devices, and/or a tracheostomy.
The Arkansas Children’s Pediatric Sleep Disorders Center is a full-service, nationally accredited Pediatric Sleep Medicine Center serving the entire state of Arkansas. The state-of-the-art five-bed pediatric sleep laboratory, located at Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, provides all types of sleep studies for the diagnosis of childhood sleep disorders as well as determining appropriate therapies such as CPAP and bilevel positive pressure. Children are seen in the Pediatric Sleep Clinic at Arkansas Children’s Hospital five days a week and telemedicine visits are available when appropriate.
Pulmonology Research
Research programs within the Section of Pediatric Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine focus on multiple areas including research in childhood sleep disorders, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, asthma, aerosol medicine, cystic fibrosis, control of breathing in preterm infants and infant sleeping products safety.
Pulmonology Fellowship
The Pediatric Pulmonology Fellowship at UAMS/ACH is an ACGME-accredited three-year intensive program preparing trainees for a career in pediatric pulmonary care, research and medical education.
