Welcome to our Section
The Section of Pediatric Cardiology in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences is a dedicated group of physicians, nurses, advanced practice providers, and fellows who strive to provide comprehensive, cutting-edge care to pediatric patients with congenital and acquired heart disease as well as adults living with congenital heart disease. We provide the entire gamut of pediatric cardiology care including all of the subspecialties of pediatric cardiology as well as adult congenital heart disease. We work closely with our pediatric cardiothoracic surgery and pediatric cardiac anesthesia colleagues to provide world-class care and outcomes as well as to fulfill our other mission of training the next generation of pediatric cardiologists and doing research to advance our field.
Outpatient Care
Pediatric Cardiology clinics are held daily at our permanent clinic sites at Arkansas Children’s Hospital, Arkansas Children’s Northwest, and Jonesboro clinic. In addition, we serve the state and region via regional clinics in the cities of Texarkana and Fort Smith (including electrophysiology and adult congenital heart disease in these locations).
Cardiology multi-disciplinary specialty clinics for patients with Single Ventricle, Muscular Dystrophy, Pulmonary hypertension, and Fontan circulation allow our cardiologists to collaborate with other specialists (Pulmonary, Gastroenterology, Hematology, etc) as well as nutritionists, pharmacologists, respiratory therapists, and social workers to provide comprehensive care for our most complex patients.
Telemedicine clinic visits are available for certain patient conditions, and we also have a telemedicine clinic for fetal echocardiography at these and other locations, which brings comprehensive fetal cardiac care to all corners of the state.
Our statewide EKG/echocardiography interpretation network partners with hospitals and clinics around the state to provide around-the-clock interpretation services for electrocardiograms and echocardiograms for patients requiring routine or even urgent cardiac evaluation. This allows patients to receive care close to home and to have screening for congenital heart disease performed without a long trip. We provide training for echocardiography technicians from around the state to enhance the quality of the echocardiograms that are sent electronically for interpretation at Arkansas Children’s Hospital.
Fellowships
Our program offers Pediatric Cardiology categorical fellowship training for two fellows per year in the three-year training program. We are training the next generation of pediatric cardiologists to serve our state, region, and nation and our graduates have been successful in securing positions at prestigious Pediatric Cardiology programs around the country.
We also offer fourth-year non-ACGME training for two fellows per year in cardiovascular intensive care and effective July 1, 2021, fourth-year advanced imaging training for one fellow per year.
