Welcome from the Chief
Welcome to the Section of Genetics and Metabolism at the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and Arkansas Children’s! Our section strives to evaluate and treat children with birth defects, developmental delays, inborn errors of metabolism, as well as many other conditions that have an underlying genetic cause.
We provide genetic services through outpatient appointments at Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, as well as through outreach clinics at Arkansas Children’s Northwest and the ACH Jonesboro Clinic. We also provide services to adult patients on the main UAMS campus in Little Rock. Additionally, we can offer consultation services to admitted patients at both Arkansas Children’s campuses as well as via telemedicine services to many newborn nurseries across the state. We are also available for phone consultations to many providers across the state.
We are proud to work in a number of specialty and multidisciplinary clinics in order to provide comprehensive and cohesive care to many complex children. See a list of our various multi-disciplinary clinics in the Patient Care section.
The Genetics and Metabolism Clinic at Arkansas Children’s Hospital is a primary rotation site for medical students, residents, and fellows, as well as students from the genetic counseling master’s degree program at UAMS. We are the primary source of genetics training for students of all disciplines and all levels from across the state. Additionally, we often welcome visiting college students who want to rotate through our clinics as well.
It takes a dedicated team to care for complex genetic and metabolic patients and I am proud to say we have the best! In addition to board-certified clinical geneticists and clinical biochemical geneticists, we have genetic counselors, metabolic dieticians and a specialty nurse. We collaborate closely with the Arkansas Department of Health for newborn screening. Because of our diverse team, we can get to know each of our patients and offer up-to-date, quality care.
Please take a moment to get to know our team and services.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Sellars, M.D.
Section Chief of Genetics and Metabolism
Our Team
Our team includes four medical geneticists (doctors who are board-certified in pediatrics, clinical genetics, clinical biochemical genetics, and endocrinology). Four genetic counselors are also a crucial part of our team. These health care professionals have a Masters in Genetic Counseling. Their role is to help people understand a genetic diagnosis and genetic test results, serve as patient advocates, and coordinate any other services for our clinic patients as needed. Additionally, we have one specialty nurse, two metabolic dieticians, and follow-up newborn screening staff.
