Hometown: Little Rock
Medical School: UAMS
Residency: UAMS Med-Peds, Chief Resident in Internal Medicine at UAMS
Fav thing about being a PD/APD for the UAMS Internal Medicine Residency? The most fun part of the job is seeing the huge potential in our interns bloom into fully functional internal medicine clinicians over the course of 2-3 years, sometimes noticing them do something I taught them. The most rewarding part, however, is helping any trainee who is struggling for any reason. Every doctor, no matter how smart and effective and perfect, can struggle. When I get a chance to help a trainee move through a difficult situation and thrive on the other end, that’s the best part of the job.
Fav thing about living in Little Rock or Arkansas? I love the mid-size feel of Little Rock with our combination of great restaurants, low cost of living and traffic, and exceptional outdoor activities.
What do you do outside of the hospital to relax/have fun? My two main hobbies are basketball and photography. As I get older the basketball is slowly receding and the photography becoming more prominent.
If you weren’t a doctor, what would you be? High School teacher and coach. I’d probably teach math and/or science, but maybe history too.
Fav show to binge watch? The Wire is my all time favorite TV show, and I always enjoy binge watching a new HBO drama like 2019’s Watchmen. But for just casual binge-rewatching, probably 30 Rock, second place Parks and Recreation. I watch a lot of TV, and I refuse to feel shame for it.
Fun fact about yourself that not a lot of people know? I was in a local TV Commercial when I was about eight years old. I don’t really know why, but it had something to do with some kind of school fundraiser involving grocery store receipts. I held a Camcorder and turned 90 degrees. It was about a two second shot. I thought my acting career was about to take off after that, but I’m still waiting on my next gig.
Anything else you want the world/future applicants to know about yourself or the program? Don’t order fecal occult blood tests when you suspect occult GI bleeding. The sensitivity and specificity are terrible, and you’ll only confuse yourself.
