Educating the Next Generation of Internal Medicine Specialists
The Department of Internal Medicine is one of the largest departments in the College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. The Department is home to approximately 150 full-time faculty members, 83 residents, and 79 fellows serving two residency programs and 12 fellowship programs. Dr. Jorge Saucedo, a cardiologist and physician, as well as an experienced clinician-investigator and seasoned administrator. Our vice chairs are Dr. Alice P Alexander, Vice Chair of Education; Dr. John Arthur, Vice-Chair of Research; Dr. Carol Anderson, Acting Vice Chair and Chief of Medicine at CAVHS; Dr. Larry Johnson, Vice Chair of Access and Opportunity Committee, and Lisa Bilello, Vice Chair for Department Administration.
Each of our 12 academic divisions is led by a division director who reports to the Chair. Each division also leads their respective services at the John L. McClellan Memorial Veterans Hospital, which is connected to UAMS Medical Center by an enclosed sky bridge. Internal Medicine is one of 21 clinical departments in the UAMS College of Medicine. It has 12 divisions: Cardiovascular Medicine, Community Health and Research, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Gastroenterology and Hepatology, General Internal Medicine, Hematology and Oncology, Hospital Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Palliative Medicine, Pulmonary and Critical Care, and Rheumatology and Immunology.
