Medical Training

Dr. Avery Zhou received her medical degree from the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) in May 2025.

Achievements

Dr. Zhou graduated cum laude from Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) with Bachelor’s degrees in Biology and Psychology, as well as a Master’s degree in Bioethics and Medical Humanities within 4 years. While a student at CWRU, she co-founded and led Case Esports Club throughout all 4 years. She created a community for gamers on campus, helped secure scholarships for competitive players, and established partnerships with local organizations including the Cleveland Cavaliers and Cleveland Public Library. She went on to attend the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV for medical school. During her time in medical school, she supplemented her ophthalmology training before residency as a uveitis research fellow for one year under Dr. C Stephen Foster and another year as a retina research fellow under Dr. Charles C Wykoff. She had the privilege to present her research at numerous national conferences and has over 60 published book chapters, abstracts, articles, and oral presentations.

Service

In medical school, Dr. Zhou was very involved in the Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association serving as Chapter President, Regional Director for two years, and National Conference Director during her last year. Through her role as National Conference Director, she successfully hosted the 2024 National Conference at the UNLV School of Medicine, the first National Conference hosted by the school. She views her National Conference Director experience as the highlight of her medical school career because of how fulfilling it felt to bring like-minded students and physicians from all over the nation together for a common cause.

Outside Interests and Hobbies

Dr. Zhou is passionate about increasing transparency surrounding the residency match process and improving mentorship among students pursuing a career in ophthalmology. She also enjoys caring for houseplants, playing video games with her husband, and spending time with her 7-lb toothless Pomeranian, Eevee.
