Sam Karimaghaei, M.D.

Medical Training

Dr. Karimaghaei received his medical degree from McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and completed a scholarly concentration in global health.

Achievements

Dr. Karimaghaei received his bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering with high honors at The University of Texas at Austin Cockrell School of Engineering. He was also a graduate of the Engineering Honors Program. In medical school, he was accepted into the global health scholarly concentration and served as a student leader for his cohort. As a global health scholar, he explored his interest in global ophthalmology by participating in the Sight for All ophthalmology program at the Venu Eye Institute and Research Center in New Delhi, India through Child Family Health International. He also helped launch the first global health blog, Global Thinkers, by the Center for Global Health at McGovern. Dr. Karimaghaei was also active in research at both McGovern Medical School and the Blanton Eye Institute at Houston Methodist, publishing papers in the fields of ophthalmology and infectious diseases. He was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society in his fourth year of medical school.

Service

Dr. Karimaghaei enjoys serving his community. At UT Austin, he frequently volunteered at the Volunteer Healthcare Clinic, a free clinic for underserved residents of Austin. At McGovern Medical School, he served the Houston homeless population at HOMES clinic and volunteered with San Jose Clinic’s free eye clinic. As a student leader with McGovern’s Ophthalmology Student Interest Group, he launched a safety glasses initiative to distribute safety glasses to those at occupational or recreational risk for eye trauma and led the organization’s efforts to collect eyeglasses for ReSpectacle, a non-profit organization dedicated to redistributing eyeglasses across the country.

Outside Interests and Hobbies

Dr. Karimaghaei is a first-degree black belt in Taekwondo. He enjoys painting and the outdoors. He also loves to travel and collect local artwork. His favorite sport is soccer.
