Resident Coaching Program
Coaching is a partnership — a thought-provoking, creative process that empowers residents to reach their full personal and professional potential. Unlike advising or mentoring, coaching is resident-driven: the resident sets the direction, identifies goals, and defines outcomes. Coaches provide support by using active listening, reflective techniques, and insightful questioning to inspire self-reflection and awareness. This process helps residents align their values and strengths with leadership behaviors, building confidence, enhancing fulfillment, and maximizing outcomes.

About the Program
Launched in January 2024, the Pediatric Resident Coaching Program replaced the traditional advisor model. Coaching emphasizes resident-led sessions designed to promote reflection, growth, and professional development in a supportive, confidential setting.
- Faculty Training: Coaches complete an initial three-hour training session led by Vice Chair of Faculty Affairs, Dr. Renee Bornemeier, and participate in annual training to continually sharpen their coaching skills.
- Resident Pairing: Each resident is paired with a coach for the duration of their residency.
- Meeting Frequency: Residents meet with their coach four times per year (twice per semester).
Goals of the Coaching Program
- Build a durable, confidential, and supportive relationship between residents and faculty coaches.
- Encourage self-reflection and awareness to foster confidence, resilience, and professional growth.
- Demonstrate the Department of Pediatrics’ and Arkansas Children’s Hospital’s commitment to residents’ personal and professional development.
- Provide meaningful psychosocial support throughout training.
