Welcome to the Education and Training page of our Section of Pediatric Endocrinology! We are passionate about nurturing the next generation of healthcare providers and fostering an environment where learning thrives. In our section, we believe in the power of mentorship and are dedicated to guiding and supporting not only trainees as they embark on their journey in medicine but also ongoing mentorship for the faculty.
The UAMS Pediatric Endocrinology faculty are very engaged within regional and national professional endocrinology societies, committees, and educational programs throughout the institution, so as to guide the trainees as both clinicians and educators. Our faculty are actively engaged in medical student and resident education, participating in didactics and bedside teaching, as well as serving on mentoring committees. The section is actively involved in community educational activities for the patients and families of Arkansas including diabetes camp for children with diabetes.
We are also proud of starting our ACGME approved Pediatric endocrinology fellowship program that aims to maintain a balance between education, well-being and clinical experience. We encourage you to explore our fellowship website for further information.
What Sets Us Apart
Our program focuses on the balance between education, well-being, and clinical experience. We encourage you to explore our fellowship website for further information.
– Comprehensive Care: Our department boasts a wide breadth of conditions treated, ranging from common endocrine disorders to rare and complex cases. As the only Children’s Hospital in the state, we have the privilege of encountering a diverse array of patients, providing trainees with exposure to many unique cases. Please review under the patient care heading for details of our guiding principles. Some highlights include:
- Our Diabetes program is American Diabetes Association (ADA) certified.
- Endocrinology and diabetes clinical service is nationally ranked by US News and World Report.
- Collaborative multidisciplinary care and clinics
- Groundbreaking treatments offered
- Faculty actively engaged in patient/family education, advocacy and community outreach
– Medium sized program: This allows for a close-knit atmosphere for personalized interactions and learning and fostering a strong sense of community and develop personal and professional relationships that last a lifetime. Ready access to faculty in such an environment leads to mentorship, individualized career guidance and research collaboration.
– Hands-On Experience: From patient consultations to diagnostic evaluations and treatment planning, trainees are actively involved in every aspect of patient care under the guidance of experienced faculty members. Our emphasis on experiential learning ensures that trainees graduate with the skills and confidence needed to excel in their careers.
With the addition of an ACGME approved Pediatric endocrinology fellowship program, we are now able to now train the next generation of endocrinologists as well.
– Mentorship: We believe in the importance of mentorship in shaping future leaders in medicine. Our faculty members are committed to providing personalized guidance and support to trainees, helping them navigate challenges, explore research opportunities, and achieve their professional goals. UAMS Pediatric endocrinology faculty participates in UAMS medical student as well as pediatric residency programs closely mentoring them including presenting at regional and national meetings. – Wellness: As a department and as a section, we recognize the importance of maintaining wellness for all trainees and faculty. Recognizing certain risk factors, such as workload, are easily measurable and adjustable, and for this reason, the number of patients seen by trainees is capped and we continue efforts to improve clinic flow, and use of technology to get charting done in the clinic. We work on team building via section retreats and monthly section meetings. Trainees have access to programs through UAMS.
– Research: Trainees at all levels (medical students, pediatrics residents, fellows) have opportunities for participation and networking for national and regional endocrine organizations and committees including travel support.
