Activities of this Division
The goals of the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes are to provide consultation and clinical care for children and adolescents with a broad spectrum of endocrine disorders and to advance research that will improve the quality of life for children affected by endocrine disease.
- Inpatient consultation and daily outpatient clinical services for general endocrine diseases, including but not limited to:
- Disorders of growth, disorders of puberty, disorders of sexual development, and congenital and acquired disorders of the adrenal, thyroid, pancreas, parathyroid, and pituitary glands
- Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome
- Osteoporosis, osteopenia and metabolic bone disorders
- Outpatient Endocrine and Diabetes clinics currently accommodate more than 4000 patient visits per year.
- The division conducts basic science research, translational and clinical research, clinical trials research and participates in multisite national network collaborations in the areas of:
- Type 1 diabetes treatment, mechanisms contributing to diabetes complications, interventions to prevent or delay diabetes onset, growth hormone efficacy, the biology of bone regeneration, the role of growth factors in bone physiology, inflammation in obesity and diabetes
- The division maintains an ACGME accredited Pediatric Endocrine Fellowship Training program.
- The division offers elective rotation educational activities for second- and third-year residents in both Pediatric and combined Medicine-Pediatric residency programs, as well as for UAMS senior medical students.
