Arkansas Biosciences Institute/Tobacco Funding – Variable Awards. These grants provide support to start new research projects, purchase scientific equipment, fund core facilities and recruit new faculty. A description of the proposed activity, a budget and budget justification are required for review by the Tobacco Allocation Committee.
Arkansas Children’s Research Institute – ACRI administers competitive funding programs for scientists employed by UAMS and affiliated with Arkansas Children’s Hospital.
Fund to Cure Stroke – $30,000 maximum with the possibility of extension. These grants focus on stroke and provide seed money to faculty members to advance/develop their individual research programs. Support is focused on developing: 1) new stroke therapies and their translation into clinical care; 2) improved diagnosis, diagnostic imaging, and stroke care; 3) improved methods of stroke prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation; or 4) clinical and pre-clinical stroke-related research. Grants for personnel are also considered.
The IDeA Clinical Research Resource Center (I-CRRC) aims to 1) strengthen communication and develop collaborations between health research institutions in IDeA states and clinical trial sponsors; and 2) develop clinical research coordinators with the knowledge and skills to manage clinical trials and complex observational studies.

Medical Research Endowment Fund – $10,000 to $15,000 maximum. These grants provide pilot research funding that has the potential to develop into extramurally funded, scientifically significant research projects. Support is focused on new areas of research for young faculty investigators and new avenues of research for mature investigators.
Faculty Research Enhancement Award – for UAMS faculty who wish to engage in a short-term activity to strengthen/enhance their research capabilities.
Center for Microbial Pathogenesis and Host Inflammatory Responses COBRE – $50,000/year for up to two years supporting research focusing on microbial pathogenesis and the manner in which the interaction between diverse microbial pathogens impacts host immunological and inflammatory responses. Center For Musculoskeletal Disease Research (CMDR) COBRE- The CMDR is a multidisciplinary center that encompasses a broad area of musculoskeletal research, including osteoporosis, orthopedics, biomechanics, multiple myeloma, cancer metastases to bone, osteoarthritis, osteomyelitis, and aberrant skeletal development. One of CMDR’s goal is to fund pilot projects as a means of supporting the efforts of musculoskeletal investigators to pursue extramural funding. The Pilot Project Research Program will provide up to $65,000 direct costs for one year’s support of research projects aligned with the CMDR focus. Download the pilot project RFA. Development Enhancement Awards for Proposals (DEAP) Grant Program – provides funds to address comments or needed revisions for new/established faculty members from all UAMS colleges who have received a score and comments on an unsuccessful proposal submitted to a federal agency/foundation that provides full indirect costs. DEAP grants are intended to assist investigators with gathering additional data that directly responds to reviewers’ comments in order to increase the competitiveness of a revised application. DEAP is funded by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and is strictly limited to supporting and strengthening reapplication following receipt of a scored proposal, and must be submitted within 12 months of receiving scored comments.
Translational Pathology Grant Program – Funding available to Department of Pathology faculty only. Variable awards and amounts; subject to interdepartmental and extra-departmental peer-review process. Translational Research Institute – TRI provides services and resources to ensure the swift translation of research into health care advances. This support is available to all UAMS researchers at the UAMS campus in Little Rock, the UAMS Northwest Regional Campus in Fayetteville, Arkansas Children’s Hospital and Research Institute in Little Rock, and the Central Arkansas Veteran’s Healthcare System in Little Rock and North Little Rock. TRI is supported by a Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) from the National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS).
Seeds of Science Cancer Research Grants – Internal funding opportunities specifically for cancer research projects offered by The Cancer Institute annually. The award provides pilot funding for cancer-related research that has the potential to develop into extramurally-funded, scientifically significant research projects. Each award provides $10,000 of support.
The Center for Studies of Host Response to Cancer Therapy (COBRE) requests applications for Pilot Project Program Awards that advance the mechanisms of and prevention strategies for radiation-therapy-induced toxicity and normal tissue injury. The goal of the pilot award/s is to fund high-impact basic, translational, and clinical research, to enhance mentoring and interdisciplinary collaborations, and to leverage extramural funding opportunities.
