Dermatology Residency Program

Program Mission Statement

The Department of Dermatology is dedicated to training outstanding physicians to provide comprehensive dermatologic care with compassion and excellence.  We combine exceptional teaching and continual recruitment of faculty who are committed to sharing their expertise and are dedicated to the care of patients.  Our goal is to provide high-quality teaching, mentoring, and care to patients and learners at UAMS.  While caring for our patients, we strive to create a training atmosphere centered on mutual respect, collegiality, humanism, and innovation.  This mission statement aligns with the sponsoring institution’s goals of educating current and future healthcare professionals, of providing high-quality patient-centered care, and of innovation in medicine.

Message from the Program Director

Megan Evans

Megan S. Evans, M.D.

Thank you for your interest in the UAMS Dermatology Residency Training Program! As the only ACGME-approved Dermatology Residency Program in the state of Arkansas, our training program is uniquely poised to help train exceptional, well-rounded dermatologists who are prepared for whatever type of practice they choose to pursue following residency. Please see the following for additional information about our program.

Our residency is a nationally accredited three-year training program. As an Advanced (non-Categorical) program, we do not provide a PGY-1 training year, so applicants must separately apply for and match into a PGY-1 ACGME-approved training program, such as a preliminary year in Internal Medicine or a Transitional Year. We have funding to provide training for a total of nine residents (three residents per year), and we participate in the National Residency Match Program each year.

Our residents receive excellent clinical training in dermatologic conditions for patients of all ages and backgrounds through clinical rotations at our three different sites  (Arkansas Children’s Hospital, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, and the John L. McClellan Memorial Veterans Hospital). We draw patients from all over the state of Arkansas as well as neighboring states, allowing our residents the opportunity to develop expertise in diagnosing and treating both “bread and butter” dermatologic conditions as well as dermatologic conditions which are more rare, severe, or complex. Residents rotate through month-long blocks at our three different sites, including faculty-led outpatient clinics, resident continuity clinics, inpatient consults, dermatopathology, and Mohs surgery. In addition, each resident has a Quality Improvement month scheduled during their second year of training and is expected to present the results of a longitudinal QI project during their third year of training.

In addition to our strong clinical training program, our residency program also offers a rigorous didactics program that combines a variety of structured didactic activities led by clinical/procedural dermatology faculty, dermatopathology faculty, the dermatopathology fellow, and the dermatology Chief Residents. This structure of incorporating peer-on-peer instruction by our dermatology Chief Residents allows our residents to have the opportunity to grow as both leaders and educators by the end of their residency training. The typical weekly didactics program will include a mixture of Dermatology Grand Rounds, textbook review sessions, kodachromes sessions, dermatopathology unknowns sessions, and faculty lectures, among others. Each Friday afternoon is reserved for structured didactic activities, with no residents assigned to outpatient clinics for the afternoon, and residents also participate in didactics activities for one hour prior to clinic each Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday morning.

Our residency program seeks to recruit applicants who:

  • are team-players
  • will excel in a close-knit program
  • possess leadership skills
  • have an interest in education and/or mentorship
  • will thrive in fast-paced clinics, and
  • are life-long learners dedicated to self-betterment

I hope you will consider applying to the UAMS Dermatology Residency Program!

Sincerely,

Megan S. Evans, M.D.
