Clinical Experience

Trainees will be exposed to a wide range of neonatal pathophysiology and will learn to skillfully manage all types of disease processes in the newborn infant. These experiences will take place in the NICU and CVICU Units at ACH, and in the NICU and Labor and Delivery at UAMS. Other clinical rotations include Genetics, Metabolic Diseases, High-Risk Obstetrics and Pharmacology. Training will also take place in a number of formal and informal conference settings in which the trainee will participate by presenting patients, defining and defending management plans.  Trainees will also be exposed to the complexities of outpatient follow up in high risk NICU graduates by participating in the High Risk Newborn Clinic. Progress is evaluated by faculty evaluations during each month of clinical training. Trainees will be under the direct supervision of the attending neonatologist, maternal-fetal medicine specialist, cardiologist or other pediatric specialist, depending on the rotation.
