General Information
Clinical rotations for second-year residents provide broad-based experience in inpatient psychiatry, consult-liaison psychiatry, night float, psychotherapy, addiction psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, and child and adolescent psychiatry.
Clinical Rotations
One semester during secondary year consists of consults at both UAMS and the VA, night float, and the VA acute inpatient psychiatry. The other semester consist of rotating every two months through the VA geriatric psychiatry inpatient unit, the long term inpatient unit at the VA, and alcohol and drug treatment unit at the VA. Residents spend one half day at the above sites. Residents rotate through the Child Study Center at Arkansas Children’s Hospital for the other half day. The Child Study Center is the psychiatric outpatient center at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. During the child and adolescent rotation, residents also spend one half day a week on the consult service at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. For a half a day per a week, residents also participate in psychotherapy: six months in weekly group therapy session and six months in individual psychotherapy. Residents also have one hour a week set aside for psychotherapy supervision.

Didactics
On Thursday afternoons all resident attend required didactics and grand rounds. The first lecture of the afternoon for PGY-2 residents is the child and adolescent series. The second session presents general psychiatry topics. The third session covers psychotherapy theory. During the first two months of the PGY 2 year, residents receive special instruction in conducting psychotherapy through an innovative seminar series with experienced psychotherapists.
Call
Second year Residents are required to cover approximately 15 long call shifts each with one to two occurring on a holiday. These shifts occur Friday through Sunday and last 12 hours (7-7), except for Friday night call (4:30 p.m. – 7:00 a.m.).
