Application and Selection

Application Process

The Neurology Residency Program uses a holistic review process when evaluating applicants. Examination scores are considered as one component of the application, but they are neither the sole nor the most important factor in the selection process. The program accepts and evaluates both USMLE and COMLEX-USA scores and reviews each applicant’s complete application, including academic performance, clinical experiences, research and scholarly activities, personal attributes, letters of recommendation, and interview performance. The Selection Committee considers the strengths and achievements of each applicant within the context of their individual educational pathway and experiences. The application and selection process complies with all requirements of the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The program does not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, color, religion, age, national origin, disability, or veteran status.

How to Apply

Applications are accepted exclusively through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Only applications submitted through ERAS will be reviewed and considered.

The UAMS Neurology Residency Program offers six categorical positions each year. Applicants who match into our Categorical Neurology Track (PGY-1 through PGY-4) are guaranteed a PGY-1 training position at UAMS. A separate application to the Internal Medicine Residency Program is not required.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following qualifications:

  1. Graduate of a medical school in the United States or Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
  2. Graduate of a college of osteopathic medicine in the United States or Canada accredited by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA).
  3. Graduate of a medical school outside the United States who has completed a Fifth Pathway Program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school.
  4. Graduate who holds a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a United States licensing jurisdiction.
  5. Graduate of a medical school outside the United States or Canada who:
    • Holds a current, valid ECFMG Certificate.
    • Is eligible for medical licensure in the State of Arkansas in accordance with Arkansas State Medical Board regulations.
    • Is able to reside continuously in the United States for the duration of training.

Additional Requirements

All applicants must:

  • Be eligible to obtain a training license in the State of Arkansas.
  • Meet ACGME and institutional eligibility requirements at the time of appointment.
  • Be able to comply with all visa, employment, and residency requirements necessary to complete the full duration of training.

Selection Process

Applications are received through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and reviewed for completeness and eligibility. To be considered for interview selection, applicants must submit all required application materials through ERAS.

  • Completed ERAS application
  • Curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Medical school transcript
  • USMLE or COMLEX-USA scores
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE/Dean’s Letter)
  • Personal statement
  • ECFMG certification (required for international medical graduates)

Interview Selection

Once an applicant has met the program’s minimum eligibility requirements and a complete application has been received, the application will undergo faculty review. Candidates selected for an interview will receive an invitation via email. Additional information regarding interview scheduling and logistics will be provided through Thalamus.

Interview invitations are extended based on a holistic review of each applicant’s academic performance, clinical experiences, leadership activities, personal attributes, and overall alignment with the mission and values of the program.

Applicants not selected for an interview will be notified through ERAS.

Interviews

All interviews are conducted virtually through Thalamus Video. Interview activities take place over two days. On Thursday evening, Dr. Humaira Khan, Program Director, provides an overview of the residency program and answers applicant questions. Applicants then have the opportunity to meet with current residents in a more informal setting to learn about their experiences and ask additional questions. Official interviews with faculty and residents are conducted virtually on Friday.

Appointment/Registration

House staff orientation is scheduled in June. Candidates to the residency training program are required to assume their clinical duties on July 1. Their appointment in our program cannot be guaranteed should they fail to do so for any reason.
