Structured Learning
In addition to the patient experience, well-organized structured learning opportunities are available. Ward rounds are held daily with the attending physician. We have integrated our didactic curriculum over the course of the residency training, hence offering a more comprehensive learning experience.
Residents have protected didactics time on Fridays from noon to 4:00 p.m. Teaching sessions take place in the Lucy Library, Room 802, Jack T. Stephens Spine and Neuroscience Institute. These include recurring lectures on epilepsy, headache, vascular neurology, neuromuscular medicine, movement disorders, neuro-immunology, neuro-oncology, neuro-ophthalmology. Additional lectures on neuro-radiology, anatomy and physiology, neuro-otology, neuropathology, neurocritical care, interventional pain, neuro-palliative medicine, sleep medicine are also included as are hands-on training sessions for Botox for spasticity and migraines. Some sessions are dedicated to Chairman’s rounds, Morbidity and Mortality conferences, and journal clubs. Grand rounds are mandatory to attend from 12-1 p.m. on Fridays. Our PGY-4 residents present one Grand Round talk as well. A few Fridays a year are reserved for wellness activities: in August 2024, residents spent the afternoon painting with one of our patients and another healthy cooking culinary activity is planned for early next year.
Neurologic emergency conferences are held in July and August to prepare incoming adult neurology residents to take call. Junior residents do buddy calls with senior residents in July and August of the academic year to get ready to take call on their own.
Resident research is showcased in the annual Sami Harik Resident Research Day and our residents get the opportunity to attend the Annual meeting of American Academy of Neurology or other professional meetings of similar standing.
