We welcome Sofia Jade Saguyod, who is a Visiting Academic Scholar from the University of the Philippines. Sofia will be spending six months in Dr. Rosie Simmen’s laboratory conducting studies to delineate the role of Metformin in Estrogen receptor signaling in endometrial carcinoma cells. Metformin is used in the management of diabetes and has been implicated to lower the incidence and mortality in many cancer types. However, its role and signaling pathway(s) in gynecological cancer are not well-understood. Sofia is a graduate student of Dr. Michael Velarde, a former Ph.D. student of Dr. Rosie Simmen in this department (2007 Ph.D. graduate). Michael is currently an Associate Professor at the Institute of Biology at the University of the Philippines.
