Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation

Doctor examining a patientThe University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), located in Little Rock, is seeking applications from board certified or board-eligible Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation physicians to help grow an established department with ample opportunities to provide generalized or specialty (SCI, EMG, TBI, Cancer or Pain) rehabilitation services to our affiliated inpatient rehabilitation hospital, outpatient neurorehabilitation and/or musculoskeletal clinics, and acute care rehabilitation consults.  The candidate will need to be committed to being part of an organization focused on providing the best care for patients through a strong interdisciplinary approach, while also working to improve health disparities in the State of Arkansas.

Other research and/or institutional opportunities may be available depending on candidate experience and interests. The faculty appointment will be in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department in the College of Medicine. Academic rank will be commensurate with experience.

About the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Established in 1984, the UAMS Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) provides comprehensive rehabilitation care in the inpatient, outpatient, and telehealth settings.  The collaborative effort of our skilled physiatrists with the institutional multidisciplinary teams and our affiliated rehabilitation hospital helps provide exceptional care to the diverse population of Arkansas and its surrounding regions. In addition to skilled general rehabilitation physiatrists, our department’s faculty includes subspecialists in Spinal Cord Injury Medicine, Brain Injury Medicine, Sports Medicine, and Pediatric Rehabilitation. Our rehabilitation subspecialists are the only such board-certified subspecialists in the state.

Residents doing an examOur faculty provides inpatient rehabilitation coverage at Baptist Health Rehabilitation Institute (BHRI), Arkansas’ largest and most comprehensive rehabilitation hospital-located in Little Rock, Arkansas.  BHRI is a 62-bed facility located on the Baptist Health Medical Center–Little Rock campus allowing 24-hour access to specialized services such as laboratory, pharmacy, and consulting and emergency medical specialists. Outpatient rehabilitation services are provided on the UAMS campus at the Orthopaedic and Spine Hospital, which opened June 1, 2023. This new, state of the art hospital provides specialty clinical care in Orthopaedics, Orthopaedic Oncology, Pain Management, and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Our physicians have direct access to collaborating specialists, in-house imaging including CT and MRI, ultrasound and Myoguide procedural equipment, and laboratory services.

This department has been at the forefront of telerehabilitation management, developing a 24-hour call center for regional spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury survivors, their caregivers, and medical/rehabilitation providers. Our team works closely with the UAMS Institute for Digital Health and Innovation (IDHI) to develop guidelines and provide tele-consultations services to help increase specialty rehabilitation access to a widely rural population.  We also work with the Arkansas Trauma Rehabilitation Resources Program, and the Arkansas Spinal Cord Commission to help develop educational programming, provide access to resources, and to advocate for our rehabilitation patient population.

The UAMS PM&R department has a strong and dynamic educational focus. It houses the only ACGME accredited Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Residency Program in the region offering four positions annually within its four-year categorical program. The program provides a well-round physiatric education with exposure to diverse clinical settings including research, academic, private, veterans, and pediatrics practices. Our program boasts a 100% ABPMR Part 1 pass rate and a 97% Part 2 pass rate. Exemplifying the broad nature of our training program, graduates have pursued further training in a variety of fellowships (TBI, SCI, Pediatrics, Interventional Spine and Pain, Cancer Rehab, etc.) but also have pursued rewarding careers in academics and private practice. The department is also deeply involved in medical school education providing lectures and clinical workshops in the first and second years of training, offering a two-week PM&R Selective during the third year of training, and offering three different PM&R electives during the fourth year of medical school.
