A Day in the Life of an Emergency Medicine Resident
Applications
All applications are reviewed and considered. If you are currently in the first year of a four plus year residency you may apply for an intern position. All aspects of the application are considered when granting interviews, but only completed applications are reviewed. A completed application includes all of the following:
- Curriculum Vitae
- Common Application Form
- Medical School Transcript
- Dean’s Letter
- At least one SLOE (except in unusual circumstances). Two SLOEs are preferred.
- Personal Statement
- USMLE Step 1/COMLEX Level 1 Score
- USMLE Step 2/COMLEX Level 2 Score if Step/Level 1 was Pass/Fail
Please note that USMLE Step 2/COMLEX 2 must be completed and posted on ERAS by February 1 in order for a candidate to be ranked.
Applications for the Emergency Medicine Residency Program are accepted only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). We will not accept mailed, faxed, or emailed applications.
We will accept applications only for twelve PGY-1 positions. We begin downloading applications in early September and begin offering interviews shortly thereafter. The deadline for completing your application through ERAS is November 20, but interview invitations are extended on a rolling basis, so it benefits you to complete your application as soon as possible.
Interviews
During the interview applicants will:
- Learn first-hand about the details and philosophy of our program
- Meet our faculty and residents
- Meet with the residents for a virtual social hour
After the completion of all interviews for a given year, the residency leadership team prepares a rank order list and submits it to the NRMP in accordance with their stated policies. Information about an applicant’s standing will not be released to the applicant.
International Applicants
International Medical Graduates should be able to meet the following requirements:
- Graduation from medical school not more than one year ago.
- No failing scores on USMLE Step 1 or Step 2.
- At least one SLOE
- Some clinical experience in the United States that was evaluated by faculty preceptors. This experience must have included responsibility for patient care and follow-up. Volunteer activities, observership, and research will not satisfy this requirement (for this reason UAMS does not allow IMGs to serve on an observership or clerkship).
These requirements are in place simply to assure that anyone entering this residency program has the background and ability to successfully complete his or her training.
