The annual UAMS Internal Medicine Research Symposium is a great opportunity for students, residents’ fellows, and faculty to share their research findings and exchange ideas with colleagues. This event offers a platform for faculty and students to discuss topics that highlight new methods and treatments to improve patient care and outcomes. The 2023 Symposium, held on May 16th, showcased projects across the Department of Internal Medicine including areas such as Hematology Oncology, Cardiology, and Infectious Disease to name just a few. Over 70 attendees, including residents, faculty, and staff reviewed 17 posters and six oral presentations by Internal Medicine and Medicine-Pediatrics housestaff.
Dr. Keyur Vyas, M.D., Program Director for the UAMS Department of Internal Medicine residency, kicked off this year’s event in the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute’s Walton Auditorium, where residents showcased their research project to faculty and peers. Through posters and oral presentations, the residents shared their findings with the department while also learning from each other’s work. This event served as a great opportunity for faculty, residents, and staff alike to gain insight and exchange knowledge with faculty from different divisions across the department.
Dr. Vyas said, “The annual IM Research Symposium serves to highlight the extensive research and QI work that is conducted by IM housestaff each year. It provides an excellent opportunity for residents to present their work and receive feedback from their peers and faculty while fostering collaboration for future projects.”
The Department of Internal Medicine thanks all those who made this a successful event. A special thank you to IM program coordinator, Sarah Levart and IM program manager, Jennifer Cushing for coordinating the event and Dr. Edward Yeh, chair, for his support of trainee research. Associate Program Directors, Dr. Harmeen Goraya, and Dr. Emily Kocurek, and faculty from across the department mentored residents in their presentations. Dr. Dinesh Edem, Dr. Ramez Awad, Dr. Spyridoula Maraka, Dr. Hunter Holthoff, Dr. Ahmed Safar, Dr. Kalaivani Sivakumar, Dr. Emily Newsome, and Dr. William Atchley served as judges for the symposium. This symposium is a testament to the dedication of UAMS’s Internal Medicine department to provide quality training for its housestaff and cutting edge, evidence-based care for its patients.
