The pediatric emergency point of care ultrasound ultrasound (POCUS) program aims to provide education and training in POCUS to the section’s faculty and fellows. A special curriculum has been developed to ensure our fellows receive the necessary training to became qualified in performing the basic PEM POCUS applications and confident with their image acquisition and interpretation skills. Our goal is to have our fellows meet the minimum credentialing criteria suggested by the American College of Emergency Physicians or the recommendations of P2network by the time they graduate the fellowship.
Lectures and hands-on sessions:
Understanding ultrasound basics
EFAST (Extended Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma)
FOCUS (Focused Cardiac Ultrasound)
Skin and Soft Tissue
Abdominal pathology in pediatrics
Lung Ultrasound
Musculoskeletal Ultrasound
Obstetrics related POCUS
Miscellaneous (Ocular, Tonsils, airway, spine, neonatal head…etc)
Ultrasound Rotation:
This is a one-month rotation schedule in the first year of fellowship. The rotation is based at the emergency department of UAMS where we work closely with our emergency medicine POCUS colleagues. During this month each fellow will have a chance to perform ultrasound studies with supervision both at UAMS and Arkansas Children’s. Thursday afternoons are dedicated for education where all fellows and residents on the rotation meet with the POCUS faculty, go over a lecture, journal club, and review interesting scans from the previous week. We are also including our first years in simulation and hands-on training with the EM residents during 5 two-hour ultrasound sessions throughout the year to further cement ultrasound basics.
Longitudinal Training:
We encourage our fellows to perform ultrasound studies while working clinically. Feedback will be provided after the studies are reviewed. The fellows have the opportunity to schedule dedicated scanning time with POCUS faculty.
Equipment:
We use 2 Mindray ME8 machines and one Mindray TE7. We use synchronicity imaging solution as our reporting and quality assurance program.
Ultrasound Faculty:
Jason Arthur – Director of POCUS fellowship (UAMS & ACH)
Zach Lewis – POCUS trained ED faculty at UAMS
