Ultrasound Training During Fellowship
The pediatric emergency point of care ultrasound (POCUS) program aims to provide education and training in POCUS to the section’s faculty and fellows. Our curriculum has been developed to ensure our fellows receive the necessary training to become both qualified in performing the essential POCUS applications and confident with their image acquisition and interpretation skills. Our goal is to have our fellows meet the credentialing criteria suggested by the American College of Emergency Physicians and be proficient in the skills recommended by the P2Network by the time they graduate fellowship.

Ultrasound Rotation
This is a one-month rotation schedule in the first year of fellowship. The rotation is based at the emergency department of UAMS where we work closely with our emergency medicine POCUS colleagues. During this month each fellow will have a chance to perform ultrasound studies with supervision both at UAMS and Arkansas Children’s. Thursday afternoons are dedicated for education where all fellows and residents on the rotation meet with the POCUS faculty, go over a lecture, journal club, and review interesting scans from the previous week. We are also including our first years in simulation and hands-on training with the EM residents during five 2-hour ultrasound sessions throughout the year to further cement ultrasound basics.
Longitudinal Training
We encourage our fellows to perform ultrasound studies while working clinically. Feedback is provided in real time and after the studies are reviewed. The fellows also have the opportunity to schedule dedicated scanning time with POCUS faculty.
Equipment
We use two Mindray ME8 machines and one Mindray TE7. We use synchronicity imaging solution as our reporting and quality assurance program.
