Preventive Medicine Residency Program

This program begins in the PGY-2 year. Every applicant must successfully complete a clinical PGY-1 year with at least 11 months of direct patient care in the inpatient or outpatient setting at an ACGME-accredited program within the United States before entering our program.

Preventive Medicine Residency to start July 2027

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) has received initial accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education to form the Dr. Joseph H. Bates Preventive Medicine Residency Program, a blend of public health and general preventive medicine. Recruitment will begin this fall with a class of two residents per year expected to start July 2027.

Healthcare Journal of Arkansas: UAMS Launches Arkansas’s First Preventive Medicine Residency Program

Arkansas now has its first preventive medicine residency program, thanks to initial accreditation awarded to UAMS for the Dr. Joseph H. Bates Preventive Medicine Residency Program. The program combines public health and general preventive medicine training, with residents also completing a Master of Public Health degree. Recruitment begins this fall, with the inaugural class set to start in July 2027.

Arkansas Democrat-Gazette: UAMS Launches Arkansas’s First Preventive Medicine Residency Program

UAMS has received accreditation for the Dr. Joseph H. Bates Preventive Medicine Residency Program — the only program of its kind in Arkansas. Funded by the Arkansas Department of Health through state tobacco tax dollars, the program is a joint venture between the Department of Health, the UAMS College of Medicine, and the UAMS College of Public Health. The first two residents are expected to begin in July 2027.
