Curriculum

The Fellowship Program in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism is designed to provide intensive clinical and research training for physicians who are board-certified or board-eligible in Internal Medicine. The fellowship lasts two years and fulfills the requirements for certification in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism by the American Board of Internal Medicine. A third year may be arranged for fellows with exceptional research skills.

The major aim of the program is to prepare physicians for careers in academic medicine by providing a firm grounding in the fundamentals of Endocrinology and Metabolism. Recognizing that career goals change, the program is flexible and highly responsive to the needs of the individual throughout the fellowship.

During each year of the program, all fellows undertake clinical and research training, the relative percentages of which vary depending on the fellow’s interest and abilities.

The program is established at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), a closely knit complex comprised of a hospital, an ambulatory care center, an eye institute, a cancer center, a center on aging and a number of unique research facilities. In addition, UAMS has affiliations with the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS) and the Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH).

To apply for fellowship training, please complete your application in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

Before we will offer you a position, we require the submission of three letters of recommendation from medical references, one of whom should be the director of your residency program. Please note, we give careful attention to letters of recommendation and personal statements. If your completed application is received by the deadline you will be considered for a personal interview. We participate in the National Residency Matching Program for Endocrinology. US graduates and Foreign medical graduates with US Internal Medicine training are welcome to apply. Our program accepts J1 and H1b visas. Appointments are generally made at least one year in advance. Stipends are determined by the number of years of training after the M.D. degree.

Clinical training includes both inpatients and outpatients and takes place in two hospitals for adults and one for children.

UAMS Medical Center

• 400-bed adult hospital
• The major secondary and tertiary referral center in the state of Arkansas
• Endocrine clinics located in the Outpatient Center building
• Strong presence of all divisions within the College of Medicine

Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS)

• 297 beds in the Little Rock division, 357 beds in the North Little Rock division
• Primary care focus in diabetes
• Designated referral center for VA facilities in Arkansas

Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH)

• 260 beds
• Child and adolescent care

An indoor footbridge connects UAMS and the John L. McClellan Memorial Veterans Hospital. Arkansas Children’s Hospital is two miles away. Concomitant research and clinical activities are easily carried out.

• There are many half-day outpatient-teaching clinics at UAMS, CAVHS, and ACH. There is one combined endocrine inpatient consulting service that covers both UAMS and CAVHS.

Training

The goal of the clinical training program is to ensure clinical excellence in all areas of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism while permitting maximum flexibility for varying career goals. Fellows attend clinics and consulting service in each year of the program. The consulting team includes faculty, endocrine fellows, medicine residents, and senior medical students. For fellows wishing to concentrate on research or clinical work, clinical duties can be reduced or increased within the guidelines set for certification in Endocrinology and Metabolism.
