There is one endocrine inpatient consulting service that covers both UAMS and the Central Arkansas Veterans Health System. Each fellow covers the inpatient service on 15 day blocks for a total of three months during the year.
Fellows are trained to manage a broad spectrum of conditions including: diabetes ketoacidosis, steroid-induced hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, myxedema coma, thyroid storm, adrenal crisis, hypercalcemia, hypocalcemia, and diabetes insipidus.
During the inpatient service, fellows’ outpatient care duties include only their CAVHS continuity care clinic (half day/week), the CAVHS insulin pump clinic (half day/month), and UAMS continuity care clinic (half day/week) for senior fellows.
