Advanced Practice Registered Nurses: Certified Nurse Practitioners and Certified Nurse-Midwives
The advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology (Ob-Gyn) at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) are a vital part of the medical team, helping to care for outpatients and inpatients in the fields of routine obstetrics and gynecology, as well as sub-specialties like maternal-fetal medicine, complex gynecology, and gynecologic oncology.
The 18 Certified Nurse Practitioners (CNPs) work closely with faculty physicians, resident physicians, nurses, and ancillary staff to deliver the superior healthcare for which UAMS is renowned. These nurses help fill unique niches in healthcare for pregnant and gynecology women across the state via telemedicine and other sub-specialties like care of pregnant adolescents, pregnant diabetic patients, pregnant obese patients, pregnant women whose babies have birth defects, incarcerated pregnant women, and many others.
Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) earn graduate degrees with education and training in nursing and midwifery, and are nationally certified by the American Midwifery Certification Board.
The UAMS Nurse-Midwives in the Ob-Gyn department are primary health care providers to women and are able to perform physical exams, order laboratory tests and ultrasounds, diagnose and treat common problems, provide prenatal care, women’s health care, labor and birth care, as well as health education and counseling. Our Nurse-Midwives attend labor and birth for the patients in the hospital setting, working in collaboration with physicians trained in Obstetrics.
Along with many other healthcare workers in the department, CNPs and CNMs also provide education for other healthcare providers across the state, to our own UAMS team, and patients statewide.
