Why did you choose UAMS?

There are many reasons I chose UAMS, but chief among them is the faculty. They are approachable, genuinely invested in residents, and bring a wide range of interests, experiences, and perspectives to the field. Each faculty member has something unique to offer, whether through clinical teaching, thoughtful discussions, mentorship, research opportunities, or simply sharing how they approach patient care.
What’s your favorite thing about Little Rock?
I love the food scene! We may not have every cuisine you could imagine, but Little Rock has so many great local restaurants, coffee shops, and bakeries, and the list is always growing. The hardest part is often choosing just one place to go! I also appreciate that there is always something to do, whether it’s a neighborhood festival, farmers market, art exhibit, performing arts event, hiking, or browsing local boutiques and pop-up shops.
What are your specific interests in psychiatry?
My interests in psychiatry include reproductive psychiatry and psychotherapy.

I chose UAMS because I was looking for a program that would provide broad exposure to the many different areas of psychiatry. From women’s mental health to forensic psychiatry, UAMS offers a wide range of clinical experiences that will help me develop a strong foundation while also giving me the opportunity to explore different interests and make informed decisions about my long-term career path.
What’s your favorite thing about Little Rock?
My favorite thing about Little Rock is how accessible outdoor activities are. I especially enjoy the Arkansas River Trail, where I’ve had many fun bike rides and runs with my co-residents. It’s been a great way to spend time outside, explore the city, and connect with the people in my program.

Parker Pruitt, M.D., PGY-2
Why did you choose UAMS?

I chose UAMS because of its culture of collegiality, curiosity, and support. The faculty and residents are approachable, enjoy working with one another, and support each other in pursuing their professional interests and goals. I went to medical school at UAMS and I ultimately chose psychiatry in large part because of the culture of the department and the meaningful work I saw faculty and residents doing with their patients.
What’s your favorite thing about Little Rock?
My favorite thing about Little Rock is that it’s a “small big city.” It has the amenities we want while still being easy to navigate and get around quickly. We also love spending time outdoors, and Little Rock offers easy access to several parks and trails in town, with many state parks and national forests just a short drive away.
What are your specific interests in psychiatry?
I plan to pursue a fellowship in consultation-liaison psychiatry though I have been considering other options after residency. Some of my other interests include biological psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, and palliative care.
