Surgery Morbidity and Mortality Conference
Every Tuesday, 7:00 – 8:00 a.m.
This is an hour-long discussion of the management of four patients who underwent treatment on one of our surgical services. This conference provides an opportunity to discuss common (and uncommon) complications of a patient’s therapy as well as the clinical presentation, differential diagnosis, diagnostic algorithm, and therapeutic strategies important in the identification and management of surgical diseases. The cases are selected by the senior residents and the chairman based upon their educational value and are presented by the resident involved in the care of the patient.
Surgical Case Presentations
Every Tuesday, 8:00 – 9:00 a.m.
This is an hour-long presentation of various cases by our chief residents to our junior residents. The sessions are interactive in a question and answer format and are moderated by faculty. These case presentations will alternate with grand rounds speakers who deliver state-of-the-art management of surgical disease. These grand round presentations are delivered by a faculty member or a visiting professor and correlate with the residents’ monthly reading assignments.
Grand Rounds
Alternates with Surgery Cases
Grand Rounds will alternate with surgical case based presentations. This will vary based on speaker availability, but board and life-relevant topics are discussed such as the essentials of trauma resuscitation, when to operate on adrenal lesions, and multiple presentations on available research at UAMS.
Clinical and Basic Sciences Conference
Every Tuesday, 9:00 – 10:00 a.m.
This is a 60-minute Socratic discussion of the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, differential diagnosis, diagnostic algorithm, and therapeutic strategies important in the management of surgical disease. The topics for discussion correlate with the residents reading assignments. We utilize the Decker curriculum, which is a robust digital educational platform that combines quality content and cutting-edge technology that helps learners stay abreast in practice.
Journal Club
Thursday, 6:30 – 8:30 a.m., once per month
This is a resident-driven, faculty-proctored two-hour informal discussion of three to four articles from the recent surgical literature. The articles are picked by the administrative chief resident and presented by both junior and senior residents. Journal Club is held monthly at a local restaurant.
