The value of a physician scientist cannot be understated. A physician scientist is trained to bridge the bench and the bedside- the basic science with the art of medicine. Although scientific progress is rapidly transforming our ability to deliver personalized medicine to patients, unanswered questions regarding disease pathogenesis persist and technologies related to improving diagnosis and patient management remain undiscovered. Taking advantage of the exemplary and thorough clinical training and ground-breaking innovative research enterprise, the UAMS combined M.D./Ph.D. program seeks to train the next generation of physician scientists who will improve the health of current and future Arkansans by answering these questions and discovering and developing these technologies.
For students who welcome the challenge of finding ways to improve medical treatment for the future, the M.D./Ph.D. program provides an exceptional opportunity. Our program contributes to the overall mission of UAMS by training our students not only to take care of the patients of today but also to contribute to the meaningful advancement of science and the development of new insights that will serve Arkansas’ patients of the future.
Thank you for your interest in pursuing a combined M.D./Ph.D. at UAMS. Our program considers applications from highly motivated individuals who have already demonstrated a deep commitment to scientific inquiry, the practice of medicine, and the betterment of patients. If you are interested in a career in academic medicine and in combining patient care with medical research, I encourage you to browse through the research projects in progress at UAMS and to investigate the opportunities afforded by the M.D./Ph.D. Program.
