UAMS Prepares You for What’s Next

Our graduates pursue an extraordinary range of careers and training pathways, reflecting both the breadth of the UAMS College of Medicine curriculum and the diverse goals of our students.

Each year, approximately half of our graduates remain in Arkansas for residency training, while the other half match into programs across the country — including some of the nation’s most highly regarded institutions. This balance reflects our dual commitment: serving Arkansas communities while preparing physicians who are competitive and successful on a national stage.

UAMS College of Medicine is routinely recognized by U.S. News & World Report among the nation’s top graduate schools for outcomes in primary care and service to underserved populations. About half of our graduates pursue careers in primary care disciplines such as family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, and med-peds, helping address critical workforce needs and improve access to care. The other half match into the full spectrum of medical and surgical specialties.

Pie chart showing that about half of our students matched in 2026 in Primary care specialties, and the other half went into other specialities. If you explore our Match data, you’ll see that within just the past four years, our graduates have matched into every specialty. Whether students envision a future in community practice, academic medicine, surgical fields or biomedical research, UAMS provides the foundation to get there.

Geographically, our graduates train nationwide. The Class of 2026 matched in nearly 29 states and Washington, D.C., including placements at nationally recognized programs such as Stanford University and Harvard‑affiliated hospitals. At the same time, UAMS remains a critical engine for Arkansas’ physician workforce: graduates who complete residency in Arkansas are significantly more likely to remain and practice here long‑term.

This combination — statewide service and national mobility — speaks to the strength and flexibility of a UAMS education. Students begin their journey here and go on to serve Arkansans, the region, and the nation, advancing health care access while contributing to research, innovation, and discovery.

With more than 11,000 alumni, UAMS College of Medicine graduates lead in clinics, hospitals, research labs, classrooms, and communities across the country. Read about Match Day 2026 and follow us on Instagram to learn more about the individual stories behind each Match Day headline.
