Sara Shalin

Sara C. Shalin, M.D., Ph.D., is Chairman of the Department of Dermatology and an Associate Professor in the Departments of Pathology and Dermatology . Within the Department of Pathology, she also currently serves as the director of the dermatopathology subspecialty section and program director of the dermatopathology fellowship at UAMS. She has previously served within the laboratory as medical director of several sections and as the director of anatomic pathology operations. She has also served as the director of the UAMS M.D./Ph.D. combined degree program since 2017.

Dr. Shalin graduated from the M.D./Ph.D. program at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. She completed her doctorate in neuroscience in 2006 and completed her medical degree in 2007. She remained in Houston at Baylor College of Medicine where she completed a residency in anatomic and clinical pathology and served as chief resident in 2010-2011. She then completed her dermatopathology fellowship training in Boston at the Harvard Hospitals Combined Dermatopathology program. Dr. Shalin was recruited to UAMS in 2012. She maintains an active interest and research collaborations in melanoma pathogenesis and the pathology of inflammatory skin diseases and other cutaneous malignancies. She was drawn to an academic career out of a desire to embrace the missions of education and research while serving a diverse patient population. Although her clinical work focuses primarily on skin disease, her interests have expanded to include patient safety, quality laboratory practices, and leadership.

Dr. Shalin is board certified in dermatopathology and anatomic and clinical pathology and is actively involved in national pathology, dermatopathology, and dermatology societies. She has participated in and led CAP inspections and holds a Certificate of Recognition in Laboratory Medical Direction from the College of American Pathologists.
