The Pediatric Pathology department is divided into two sections: anatomic and clinical pathology. Anatomic pathologists are focused on tissue diagnosis. The bulk of their clinical material comes from the Arkansas Children’s Hospital operating rooms (>5,000 cases annually) and autopsies (50 annually). Clinical pathologists are focused on diagnosis and monitoring disease via the evaluation of body fluids obtained and processed at Arkansas Children’s Hospital Clinical Laboratory (>1,000,000 cases annually). These laboratories include blood bank, clinical chemistry, coagulation, hematology, microbiology and molecular diagnostics. We have an expanding metabolic genetics laboratory that works intimately with the clinical geneticists at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. This laboratory section also supports the state’s ever expanding newborn screening program.
