Sergio Pina-Oviedo, M.D.

Sergio Pina Oviedo

Dr. Pina-Oviedo was born in Mexico City, Mexico. He obtained his medical degree from the Universidad Panamericana School of Medicine in Mexico City, where he graduated with honors. During medical school he also obtained a Masters Degree in Diagnostic Hematopathology from the “Instituto de Hematopatologia” in Mexico City. For a few years he taught medical students the subjects of Histology and Cell Biology, Hematology, and Pathophysiology at his Alma Mater.

Prior to his pathology residency, Dr. Pina-Oviedo did 4 years of research in neurovirology, viral oncology and molecular biology at the Center for Neurovirology, Temple University in Philadelphia, PA.  He then completed his AP/CP residency at Houston Methodist Hospital (2010-2014) and did fellowships in Oncologic Surgical Pathology and Hematopathology at The University of Texas – M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX (2014-2017). During his Surgical Pathology fellowship, he also held the position of Chief Fellow. He is certified in both Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and Hematopathology.

Among his academic achievements, Dr. Pina-Oviedo has near to 70 peer-reviewed publications, 25 book chapters, and is author or coauthor of several abstracts on different subjects of pathology, hematopathology, neuroscience, neurovirology and viral oncology. Dr. Pina-Oviedo is Section Editor in Hematopathology for Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Associate Editor in Hematologic Malignancies for Frontiers in Oncology, and an Editorial Board member of Annals of Diagnostic Pathology. His academic interests include the study of correlation between morphology and molecular alterations, lymphomas, thoracic/lung pathology, neuropathology, ophthalmic pathology, infectious diseases, and the history of pathology.

Dr. Pina-Oviedo joined the Department of Pathology of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 2017 as an Assistant Professor. In July 2020 he was appointed Director of the Hematology laboratory.
