Susanne Jeffus, M.D.

Susanne Jeffus

Susanne Jeffus is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). She obtained her medical degree from UAMS. She completed her residency training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of Virginia (UVA) in Charlottesville, where she also served as chief resident. She remained at UVA for two fellowships and is subspecialty board certified in blood banking and transfusion medicine and cytopathology. She joined UAMS as faculty in 2013.

Dr. Jeffus’ clinical responsibilities at UAMS include Surgical Pathology (Thoracic and Gynecologic Pathology), Cytopathology, and Autopsy Pathology. She is the section chief of the Thoracic Pathology Service. She also provides cytopathology services for the Arkansas Children’s Hospital. 

Dr. Jeffus currently serves as the Director of the Cytopathology Fellowship at UAMS. She is passionate about leading a dynamic fellowship program.​ She has extensive expertise in graduate medical education and administration. She served from 2014-2024 in Residency Program Leadership as Associate and Director of the Pathology Residency Training Program at UAMS. She enjoys teaching and mentoring trainees and has received several teaching awards. 

On a national level, Dr. Jeffus is involved in the Program Evaluation of Competency (PEC) Committee at the American Society for Cytopathology (ASC), for which she currently chairs the Fellow Exam Subcommittee. She previously served on the Question Audit Subcommittee for the ASC (2022-23), the Program Directors Council (2022-24), and the National Diversity in Pathology Education Working Group (2023-24).

Her research interests include squamous neoplasia of the vulva and endobronchial ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration cytology of thoracic lesions. She has authored several textbook chapters, presented her scholarly work at national and international meetings, and co-authored more than 40 peer-reviewed publications: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?term=jeffus+susanne&sort=pubdate
