Specialists

Members of the Section of Colorectal Surgery, Jonathan Laryea, M.D., Jason Mizell, M.D., and Conan Mustain, M.D., provide state-of-the-art, multi-disciplinary care to patients with benign and malignant diseases of the colon, rectum and anus.

Our physicians are part of a team of medical and surgical specialists in gastroenterology, surgery, genetics, medical and radiation oncology, and radiologists who provide a multidisciplinary approach to patients with cancer of the colon, rectum and anus at the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute. Our physicians provide care at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Medical Center and the John L. McClellan Memorial Veterans Hospital in Little Rock.

Patient Care

Members of this section commonly care for patients with:

  • Cancer and polyps of the colon, rectum and anus, including hereditary cancer syndromes
  • Inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and pouchitis
  • Complicated diverticular disease such as diverticulitis with perforation or diverticular bleeding
  • Colonic obstruction from cancer, volvulus, and benign strictures
  • Fistulous connections between the intestine and the skin, bladder, vagina, or urethra
  • Chronic constipation
  • Rectal prolapse
  • Complications of ileostomies and colostomies, such as hernias or stenosis
  • Radiation injury to the rectum
  • Fecal incontinence
  • Pilonidal cysts & infections
  • Common diseases of the anus, including hemorrhoids, anal fissure, anal fistulas, anal condyloma, anal stricture, anal infections

Our group also provides services that include:

  • Colonoscopy (including the resection of large and complex polyps)
  • Minimally invasive surgery for colorectal diseases (including colon and rectal resection)
  • Re-operative colon and rectal surgery
  • Surgical treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (including ileoanal anastomosis and ileal pouches)
  • Sphincter-sparing operations for rectal diseases including rectal reconstruction
  • Surgery for fecal incontinence
  • Surgery for constipation
  • Surgery for treatment of rectal prolapse
  • Hemorrhoidectomy
  • Anal reconstructive surgery
  • Fistula repair
  • Emergency Surgery for the colon and rectum
  • Evaluation of fecal incontinence, constipation and other functional disorder of the anus and rectum
