Trauma and Acute Care Surgery

In 1991, the UAMS Medical Center was verified by the American College of Surgeons as a Level I Trauma Center. In subsequent years, the UAMS Trauma Center has continued to provide quality care to traumatically injured patients.

Team of Experts

The UAMS Medical Center serves as a tertiary referral center for critically injured adult patients, admitting more than 2,800 patients with traumatic injuries each year. The Trauma Center is staffed by the faculty of the UAMS Department of Surgery, Division of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care. All division members are involved in teaching, research and administrative activities. This highly dedicated surgical faculty, together with closely supervised senior and junior general surgery residents, provide around-the-clock coverage, to save Arkansas’ most critically injured patients.

The Surgical Critical Care team is an interdisciplinary team of experts providing state of the art advanced tertiary medical care to critically ill and injured adult patients admitted to UAMS’s 24 bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit. Providing optimal care of the surgical critical care patient requires both the broad range of specialists available at UAMS, as well as the resources of a tertiary referral center.

Comprehensive Care and Education

This group provides comprehensive patient care, education and training of residents, with the most advanced research to improve the management of trauma and critically ill surgical patients. Areas of research interest include: Injury, Sepsis, and Multiple System Organ Failure.

Division members actively promote the Trauma Program’s public education activities through its community outreach and injury prevention programs. As a statewide educational resource, the UAMS Trauma Program serves as Arkansas’ resource for trauma and critical care education such as Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) and Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC). The UAMS Trauma Prevention Program presents injury prevention programs to schools, community groups and churches. Prevention activities are provided primarily by the Trauma Program and Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) nursing staff. For more information about prevention programs, contact the Trauma Program Office at 501-686-8159.
