Recent Achievements

Faculty members of the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences have recently earned national and international accolades.

Top Scientists

Three of them were listed among the World’s Top 25 Scientists in a study by Stanford University. They are John Dornhoffer, M.D., FACS, professor and chair of the department, for research in otorhinolaryngology; Ekaterina I. Galanzha, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor, for research in optoelectronics and photonics; and Vladimir P. Zharov, Ph.D., D.Sc., professor and director of the Arkansas Nanomedicine Center at UAMS, for research in optoelectronics and photonics.

The Top Scientists study is based on an analysis of Scopus, the largest database of peer-reviewed research literature. To determine the most influential researchers, the study authors used a combination of citation metrics to rate a researcher’s influence in their subfield over the course of their career, through 2019 – the most recently available data. Citation metrics included the h-index, a measure of a researcher’s productivity and impact; and hm-index, which accounts for the researcher’s co-authorships. The metrics were used to establish a composite indicator, or score.

Top Doctors

Bottom row: Jumin Sunde, M.D., Ozlem Tylunay-Ugar, M.D., and Omar Atiq, M.D.

In addition, Dornhoffer and four other otolaryngology faculty were named among the annual Top Doctors in the U.S. by Castle Connolly, a leading research and health care information service. In addition to Dornhoffer, they are Adam Johnson, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor; Gresham T. Richter, M.D., FACS, FAAP, professor and vice chair of pediatric services; Ozlem Tulunay-Ugar, M.D., professor; Jumin Sunde, M.D., assistant professor; and Omar Atiq, M.D., professor.

The annual Top Doctors list is based on a poll of thousands of doctors across the United States. The doctors are peer-nominated and then thoroughly vetted by Castle Connolly’s physician-led research team. The service calls them “the best-in-class healthcare providers, embodying excellence in clinical care as well as interpersonal skills,” and says they represent the top seven percent of all practicing physicians in the United States.
