The UAMS Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery will be well represented at the specialty’s upcoming national meeting, with nine faculty and four residents presenting on a range of topics.
The American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery is hosting its Annual Meeting and OTO Experience from Oct. 7-10 in Atlanta, Georgia. In its 122nd year, the event highlights the discipline’s latest advances, with special attention paid to new research findings, approaches and treatment options. It attracts more than 5,500 participants from across the world.
“Staying abreast of the latest innovations is important to what we do as surgeons, scholars and educators,” said John Dornhoffer, M.D., chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology. “The academy meeting is an annual opportunity for us to not only expand our own knowledge base, but also to take on a leadership role in the field by sharing our own work with our colleagues. I’m proud of the faculty and residents who were selected to participate.”
The presentations are:
- Dornhoffer – Lead presenter for both “Ossiculoplasty: Indications and Techniques” and “Techniques in Cartilage Tympanoplasty.”
- Larry Hartzell, M.D. – Lead presenter for “Cleft Lip and Palate: What Every ENT Should Know” with co-presenter Adam Johnson, M.D., Ph.D.
- Mauricio Moreno-Vera, M.D. – Senior author for “Osteocutaneous Radial Forearm Versus Fibula Free Flap: Is the Forearm Truly Less Morbid?” with presenting author and resident Quinn Dunlap, M.D.; “Single Anastomosis Technique for Simultaneous Superficial and Deep System Venous Drainage of Radial Forearm Free Flaps” with co-author and fellow faculty Emre Vural, M.D., and co-author and resident Luke Small, M.D.; and “Elective Pharyngeal Reconstruction with Free Tissue after Salvage Laryngectomy: Delayed Functional Outcomes” with co-author and resident James Russell, M.D.; and lead presenter for “Technique Review on Lateral and Central Neck Dissection: Improving Surgical Outcomes” with co-presenter Brendan C. - Gresham Richter, M.D. – Senior author for “Utilizing Process Improvement Strategies to Generate Clinic Templates and Improve Patient Flow in Pediatric Otolaryngology” with presenting author and resident Michael Kubala, M.D.; and co-presenter for both “Diagnosis and Management of Arteriovenous Malformations” and “Laryngomalacia and its Variants: Contemporary Thoughts and Management.”
- Stack – Abstract moderator for “Scientific Oral Presentations: Endocrine Surgery”; panelist for “Nerve Monitoring: Education, Set-up, and Troubleshooting”; and lead presenter for “Neck Dissection Thyroid Cancer and the ATA Guidelines.”
- James Suen, M.D. – Lead presenter for “Diagnosis and Management of Arteriovenous Malformations” with co-presenter Richter.
- Ozlem Tulunay-Ugur, M.D. – Lead presenter for “Pearls of Dysphagia Management in the Older Patient” and panelist for “Not Just Blowing Wind: Tracheotomy Care Best Practices.”
The American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery is one of the oldest medical associations in the nation. It represents about 12,000 physicians and allied health professionals who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the ears, nose, throat and related structures of the head and neck.
