Education

Lifelong Learner and Teacher

We value the role of residents as educators of the next generation of medical professionals. We offer all residents opportunities to hone their skills as clinical educators. We offer training in giving effective feedback, bedside teaching, and innovative approaches to didactics.

  • “Pre-tending” in Teaching Clinic: Third year residents on outpatient Pediatrics have the opportunity to act as the attending for 3rd year medical students. These residents help prep and prime students for the patients they will see, receive “check out” and guide the students’ clinical reasoning and decision-making. Pretending residents also offer direct observation at the bedside to hone medical students’ communication skills, bedside manner, and physical exam skills.
  • Teaching Resident on Hospitalist rotation: Residents who participate in the hospitalist elective have the opportunity to run rounds as if they were the attending. They also have the opportunity to facilitate an education discussion or lecture for residents and students.
  • Morning Report: Case-based discussion led by residents 4 times each week, with a focus on developing a differential diagnosis, clinical decision-making and management, and highlighting a learning point. Curious about what this looks like?
  • Ask and Answer: Resident created and resident led, these twice monthly sessions utilize multiple-choice board review questions led by 3rd year residents. Each session is interactive and reinforces clinical concepts learned throughout the month.
  • Medical Student Powerpoints: Our residents created a repository of quick clinical pearls for inpatient service that all medical students should know. Still feeling unsure what to teach or how? Residents can pull from this repository and walk through a powerpoint with their students on the fly!
