Cancer project gets grant of $894,704
University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences received a four-year, $894,704 grant as part of a project to teach computers to recognize cancer. The project will use machine learning to help computers identify cancer, see if the disease is responding to treatment and note changes to genetic patterns.
The initiative is part of EuCanImage, a $9 million effort headed by the University of Barcelona in Spain. Universities in the Netherlands, Austria, Italy, Sweden, Poland, Lithuania and the United Kingdom also are involved.
Fred Prior, chairman of the UAMS College of Medicine Department of Biomedical Informatics, will lead a UAMS team involved with the U.S. portion of the project.
