The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences has yet again been recognized for its diversity and inclusion efforts.
In October, UAMS received the 2021 Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education.
As a recipient of the annual award, UAMS will be featured along with 50 other recipients in the December 2021 issue of the magazine. The national honor recognizes health colleges and universities in the United States that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion.
This comes on the heels of two distinctions from Forbes Magazine in 2021. In April, UAMS ranked seventh nationally on an annual list of Best Employers for Diversity.
The rankings are based on independent surveys of more than 50,000 people in workplaces of more than 1,000 employees. They include both direct and indirect recommendations and consider both diversity in executive leadership and institutional efforts to promote diversity in the workplace.
In July, Forbes named UAMS to its list of Best Employers for Women 2021. UAMS was ranked 86th on a list of the top 300 companies in the United States, putting it in the top 30%. UAMS was the only company in Arkansas to make the list.
Excellence
This commitment to diversity and inclusion comes in addition to UAMS’ dedication to excellence.
For the third year in a row, the ear, nose and throat (ENT) department at UAMS ranked among the top 50 nationwide on a list compiled by U.S. News & World Report. The digital news and information company that is the global leader in quality rankings also recognized UAMS as a Best Hospital for 2021-22 and named five areas as high performing: colon cancer surgery, diabetes, hip replacement, knee replacement and stroke. UAMS’ ENT program is the only one at any hospital in Arkansas to achieve national ranking status.
In addition, UAMS ranked 39th in primary care on U.S. News & World Report’s 2022 Best Medical Schools list. UAMS’ ranking in primary care went up from 63rd in 2021 to 39th in the recently published list. The list ranked 122 medical schools on the quality of education in the primary care field.
