The second annual UAMS Surgical Research Symposium was held May 9 with an enthusiastic turnout. We had over 50 attendees with 25 presenting posters. This event showcased the diverse areas of research performed in the Department of Surgery, and highlighted novel therapies and devices, as well as modification of standard treatment protocols for improving patient care and outcomes across UAMS and Arkansas. This research is carried out in collaboration with numerous departments and divisions across campus including the Radiology, Nursing, Anesthesiology, Pathology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the Translational Research Institute and the Institute for Digital Health and Innovation, along with many more.
Our keynote speaker, Dr. Lesly Dossett from the University of Michigan, gave an outstanding talk presenting her years of research on health care delivery and decision making, and the interface between primary care providers and cancer specialists. Following her talk, she met with the surgery residents for a lunch Q&A where she asked a lot of questions about our program and the residents’ interests. They also discussed funding for research, work, and extracurriculars.
Awards for posters went to:
Best overall: Ana C. Azevedo-Pouly for “Chemical Inhibition of DNA-PKcs Impairs the Activation and Cytotoxicity of CD4+ Helper and CD8+ Effector T Cells”
Speaker’s Pick: Seana Corbin for “Trends in Racial Disparities in Breast Cancer Outcomes in Arkansas: Are There Signs of Hope?”
Chair’s Pick: Collin Pilkington for “Readmissions after Traumatic Brain Injury in the Nationwide Readmissions Database”
