The fourth annual Surgical Research Symposium was held on Tuesday, March 18, drawing over 100 faculty, students, and residents to the tenth floor of the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute. While most attendees were from the Department of Surgery, we were pleased to welcome participants from Orthopaedics and Otolaryngology as well, reflecting a growing interest in collaborative research across specialties.
This half-day event showcased 45 poster presentations in three categories: clinical study, case study, and basic science. Each poster provided an opportunity for presenters to share innovative research and receive valuable feedback from faculty and peers.
Posters with co-authors in the Department of Surgery were judged by department faculty and Dr. Blackmon. Awards for the best poster in each category were presented to Nicholette Black, D.O., Breast Surgical Fellow, for Best Clinical Study; Beau Belcher, Medical Student, for Best Case Study; and Randall Rainwater, M.D., Ph.D. student, for Best Basic Science.

A highlight of the event was the keynote address by Shanda H. Blackmon, M.D., MPH, an internationally renowned thoracic surgeon and Director of the Lung Institute at Baylor Medicine. Dr. Blackmon delivered an inspiring keynote address emphasizing the importance of advancing surgical technique through research.

The symposium not only celebrated the exceptional research conducted within the department but also fostered an environment for discussion, learning, and collaboration. Attendees left energized and motivated to continue their work, pushing the boundaries of surgical innovation.
Kudos to Surgery Chair Dr. Ron Robertson and the faculty, residents and organizers who made it a great success. Plans are already underway for next year’s symposium, where we aim to build on this momentum and continue to promote cutting-edge research that advances the field of surgery.
