Breast Imaging Fellowship Program

Gwendolyn Bryant-Smith, M.D., Program Director
Lacie Covington, Program Coordinator

Prerequisite: ABR-certified or eligible or more than one year ACGME-training and prior experience deemed suitable by the program director; USMLE Steps 1-3.

Overview

This is a one-year fellowship with single clinical rotation in the UAMS Breast Center, encompassing the complete spectrum of breast imaging: digital diagnostic and screening mammography with computer aided detection (CAD), breast ultrasound, needle localization, cyst aspiration, core biopsy (stereotactic, MRI and ultrasound guided), and breast MRI. The fellow is part of a multidisciplinary team of breast surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists and plastic surgeons. All surgical and complicated cases are reviewed with this group at a weekly multi-disciplinary breast conference.

These one-year fellowships are sponsored by the department, so appointment will be contingent on receipt of an Arkansas medical license (see Regulation 14 of the Regulations of the Arkansas State Medical Board). You will be given ample time to fill out your appointment packet and apply for the license before beginning the program. Follow the Fellowship application process below

Application Process

Qualified candidates for programs that do not participate in the Residency Match should submit a completed Universal Application form with a current CV, a personal statement of career goals and professional plans, and a USMLE transcript (all scores).

We require three letters of recommendation from current and former clinical faculty. One letter must be from your program director and all should be recently dated and on institutional letterhead. If you have been in private practice for five or more years, however, non-partner physician letters are acceptable.

We recommend you submit your application materials as soon as they are available. Complete applications are reviewed in an ongoing fashion and it is our policy to make interview decisions as quickly as possible. Candidates who are selected for an interview will notified by e-mail and scheduled for an on-campus visit.

Applications may be sent by mail, fax, or email. Letters of recommendation must be on institutional letterhead and mailed to the department. Letters sent by fax or email will not be considered.

If you are an international graduate, we request that you enter the country at least two weeks prior to the start of the fellowship in order to adequately process your appointment and complete all documentation required for you to begin the fellowship program on the approved start date.

If you have questions about any of the residency options, please contact the Program Coordinator.

The UAMS Department of Radiology welcomes applications from all qualified applicants.

Candidates for ACGME-accredited programs must meet all program-specific eligibility criteria. You will not need a medical license while in the program, but the College of Medicine will not admit a resident/fellow that the Arkansas State Medical Board (ASMB) will not consider for an Arkansas license. (See Arkansas Medical Practices Act 17-95-401 through 17-95-407 on Licensing and Regulation 14 of the Regulations of the Arkansas State Medical Board.).

Before you interview with us, we ask you to become familiar with the terms, conditions and benefits of appointment and employment.

Note to International Medical Graduates

We seek the most qualified residents and fellows, regardless of country of education. Some of our most outstanding residents and faculty are international medical graduates (IMGs). Because of the large number of applications and the difficulty of evaluating the records of IMGs, we can offer interviews only to those graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada who have a currently valid ECFMG certificate prior to appointment or a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in Arkansas and meet the eligibility requirements for the program.
