Microbiology and Immunology (MBIM)

MBIM 5101 Immunology: The fundamentals of immunology are presented with an emphasis on the cellular and molecular basis for understanding current concepts of lymphocyte activation, cytokine activities, and immune disorders. Prerequisite: Instructor Consent. (3 credit hours, Spring)

MBIM 5103 Basic Principles of Microbiology:  A basic understanding of bacteria and viruses is presented. Emphasis will be placed on the physiology, replication, and gene exchange in bacteria. Virology will focus on virus replication strategies and pathogenesis. Prerequisite: Instructor consent. (3 credit hours, Spring)

MBIM 5033 Medical Microbiology: Lectures, case presentations, conferences, and laboratories consider the basic biology of pathogenic bacteria, fungi, and viruses and their role in the causation of human disease. (3 credit hours)

MBIM 5105 Molecular Virology: Lectures and assigned reading pertaining to the biochemistry and molecular biology of viruses. Prerequisite: MBIM 5103 or instructor consent. (3 credit hours)

MBIM 5106 Microbiology and Immunology Seminar: Required for all MBIM students during the Fall and Spring semesters. Invited speakers and departmental students present their research. Attendance is required and participation is essential. (1 credit hour, Fall and Spring).

MBIM 5107 Research in Microbiology and Immunology: Various areas of experimental microbiology and immunology can be studied under the direction of graduate faculty members. (1-10 credit hours, Fall, Summer, and Spring)

MBIM 5109 Current Topics in Microbiology: Literature-based discussion and advanced study on selected topics in microbiology research. Required during the Fall or Spring semester for all MBIM students. (1 credit, Fall and Spring)

MBIM 5110 Current Topics in Immunology: Literature-based discussion and advanced study on selected topics in immunology research. Required during the Fall or Spring semester for all MBIM students. (1 credit, Fall and Spring)

MBIM 5111 Bacterial Genetics and Pathogenesis: Lectures and advanced study focusing on molecular approaches used in the study of the interactions between bacteria and humans. (3 credit hours)

MBIM 5201 Master’s Thesis: Laboratory research credit toward a Master’s thesis project. Prerequisite: Graduate standing and instructor consent. (1-6 credit hours) (Fall, Summer, and Spring).

MBIM 6101 Molecular Mechanisms in Immunology: Lectures and discussion of relevant publications will cover specialized topics in immunology, emphasizing molecular aspects of function. Prerequisite: MBIM 5101 or instructor consent. (3 credit hours) (Fall and Spring)

MBIM 6102 Networks in Immunology: Lectures and discussion of relevant literature will cover selected topics in immunology and immunopathology, emphasizing the complex molecular interactions in immunology in the context of disease. Prerequisite: MBIM 5101 or instructor consent. (3 credit hours)

MBIM 6104 Advances in Microbiology and Immunology:  A literature-based course that emphasizes advanced concepts and critical analysis of three disciplines: Immunology, Virology, and Bacteriology. Prerequisite: MBIM 5101 and MBIM 5103. (4 credit hours, Fall)

MBIM 6105 Advances in Microbiology and Immunology: A literature-based course that emphasizes advanced concepts and critical analysis of three disciplines: Immunology, Virology, and Bacteriology. Prerequisite: MBIM 6104. (4 credit hours, Spring).

MBIM 6201 Doctoral Dissertation: Laboratory research credit toward a doctoral project. Prerequisite: Graduate standing and instructor consent. Prerequisite: candidacy and consent. (1-10 credit hours) (Fall, Summer, and Spring)
