I joined Dr. Youssef Aachoui’s lab as a post-doctoral fellow in January 2019. In the Aachoui Lab, we are interested in studying host-pathogen interaction using various bacterial species. We specifically focus on the innate immune system sensors called inflammasomes and associated cell death. Canonical inflammasome pathway activates caspase-1 which subsequently mediates the maturation of proinflammatory cytokines pro-IL-1b and pro-IL-18 or pomotes pyroptosis. In non-canonical pathway, caspase-11 directly binds the LPS, inducing pyroptosis and the production of proinflammatory cytokines. Pyroptosis removes the replication niche of intracellular bacteria and promotes bacterial clearance through the recruited neutrophils.
My current study examines the cell type specific regulation of canonical and non-canonical inflammasome pathway. I also investigate the role of caspase-11 in neutrophil and bacterial immune evasion strategies targeting inflammasome complex using Burkhloderia thailandensis and Shigella flexneri as model bacteria.
